I took a selfie of my left arm decorated with a red Walgreens’ band-aid. I had just received the first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
I wanted a break – a mini-vacation from the turmoil of the last year and a half.
I also wanted and needed vine-ripened tomatoes.
And … I am not referring to the lights in the building. It’s three o’clock in the afternoon on the Monday before Easter, and the Whole Foods Market at Garden City Center in Cranston, Rhode Island is busy. According to the Providence Journal, the store opened in 2007, heartily welcomed by the local community – ready for an upgrade from the former occupant of the space, Shaw’s Market.

Located steps south of the bustling sidewalks and bumper-to-bumper traffic on 17th avenue, is one my favourite coffee shops: Caffe Beano. Established in 1990, it’s one of Calgary’s few independently-owned coffee shops to survive the growing invasion of large chains and ever-present challenges of being a local business (CBC News, 2015; Calgary Herald, 2021).
